Top musical talent

The Mansion House at Old Warden Park near Biggleswade is playing host to some of top musical talents in the world.

The Music for You summer school has this year decided to locate itself in the stately home and rolling grounds of the Shuttleworth Estate - and brings with it young musicians from China, the Continent, Russia and the Americas.

Together with adult learners, the young students are being coached by some of the very best musicians (including one who played for the USA President a few weeks ago) and there is a chance for local people to sign up too.

Summer School Director Dawn Bradley-Buxton says: “There is not other forum where people of all ages and abilities are brought together through music and bring with them their different instruments, styles and techniques.”

In the first week (Sunday August 6th - Saturday 11th start1pm) the Orchestral Course is directed by Guy Woolfenden OBE and Dr Laszio Marosi.

There is also a string course, a wind band and conductor’s course - which will end with a concert for family and friends.

In the second week (Sunday August 12th -  Saturday 18th start10am) it is Jazz with Dave Newton, Christian Brewer, Mike Ourtram and Al Swainger, Kev Sanders and Sam Brown plus saxophonist Alan Barnes running a workshop on the afternoon of Wednesday 15th.

There is also the Folk Course (August 13th - 15th) directed by Stewart Hardy, Karen Tweedy and Jo Freya . Various activities are open to non residents - for instance a ticket to a workshop is just £8 for adults and £4 for children aged 10 - 17. Free for those under 10. There is a folk Ceilidh (kaylee) dance on the evening of Tuesday August 14th at £15 adults/£7.50 children.
